Mike Caulfield

Mike Caulfield is a digital literacy researcher and affiliate of the Digital Inquiry Group. Creator of SIFT, a framework for the contextualization of sources and claims, his approach focuses on recovering the context often lost as claims and sources move across the web.

Caulfield’s SIFT method is one of two major approaches to teaching online information literacy in the United States, and through Google's Super Searchers training the method has been taught to millions around the world. Previously, he studied online rumors and misinformation at the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public.

His current work explores how artificial intelligence can support inquiry and reasoning, helping students and citizens investigate questions, examine evidence, and develop and critique arguments. He is coauthor, with Sam Wineburg, of Verified: How to Think Straight, Get Duped Less, and Make Better Decisions about What to Believe Online (University of Chicago Press, 2023).
