Born into slavery, Susie King Taylor served in the Union Army as a nurse during the Civil War. Taylor self-published an autobiography that tells her life story from her birth in 1848 up to 1902. In this lesson, students will examine historical documents to answer the question: What can we learn from the autobiography of Susie King Taylor?
Note: This lesson was designed with elementary school students in mind but can be used with a wide range of students.
