Education for previously enslaved people was a major question and concern following the Civil War. Under slavery, enslaved people had been forbidden from attending school or even learning to read. In the early years of emancipation, thousands of freedmen’s schools were established. In this lesson, students analyze historical documents to explore who established these schools.
